The Hard Part
Why Leaks Are So Hard to Find
Water doesn’t fall straight down and wait to be noticed. It travels — and that’s what makes hidden leaks tricky.
A pinhole in a supply line can carry water along a pipe’s exterior, across a joist, or behind drywall for days before anything showsre visible. By the time you see a stain on the ceiling, the actual break may be several feet away — sometimes in a different room entirely. That’s why the stain is never the diagnosis: treating the wet spot without finding the source usually means the water just reappears somewhere else.
This is the job water leak detection exists for — the careful work of narrowing down where water is escaping, by following moisture patterns, isolating sections of the system, and testing fixture by fixture until the source reveals itself. It’s a separate step from the repair itself, and skipping it is how walls get opened in the wrong place.
